UNN Post-UTME cancellation: ASUU calls for probe

The University of Nigeria Nsukka chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called for the institution of a panel to probe the circumstances leading to the cancellation of the post-UTME screening test scheduled by the university recently.

The union described the cancellation as an international disgrace and dent on the institution’s image. Chairman of the academic body, Dr. Aloysius Michaels Okolie, reacting to the cancelled exam, said he felt too bad about the implication of the cancellation of the exam on the image of the university, saying the authority needed to address a world press conference to dissociate itself from the bungled exercise.

“If the committee fails to produce those responsible for the failure of the exam, then I advocate probe panel to retrieve the university’s image and distance the administration from the mess. I felt too bad about the cancellation,” Okolie lamented.

The union’s boss told Daily Sun that it was not enough to blame the cancellation which brought shame to the university simply on “unforeseen circumstances. The committee needs to fish out those responsible for the failure of the exercise and punish them or bear the responsibility itself (committee).”

He, however, absolved the Vice Chancellor, Professor Bartho Kolo and his deputies of any blame in the failed examination exercise, but apportioned blames on his confidants, who did not live up to expectation. “The Vice Chancellor is not to be blamed.  You cannot expect him or his deputies to conduct the exam themselves, there are other professors who are committee members,” Okolie stated.  He noted the cost implication of the conduct of another post-UTME exam by the university and the inconveniences to candidates, but quickly warned that the committee should put its house in order before embarking on another exercise.

He advocated a decentralization of the examination along departmental lines with deans of faculties at the helm of affairs. “If this is done, deans can be held responsible for any failure arising from the conduct of the exam. I think there is a lot of blackmail and propaganda. Some people are being economical with the truth.

The person at the top may not know this. We insist that if the committee cannot conduct the exam centrally, then, it should decentralize the conduct, involving deans of faculties. We advocate a probe of the bungled exercise. This is the stand of ASUU,” the chairman re-emphasized.
