Computer software giant Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) has made a belated entry into the world of tablet computing which is already dominated by it’s rival Apple Inc. (AAPL) hence
altering it’s long term strategy of focusing on softwares. It unveiled
its own Windows-powered tablet computer named Surface, a device
Microsoft said would combine the best of PCs and mobile computing.
“We
wanted to give Windows 8 its own companion hardware innovation,”
Ballmer said. The result was “completely new and different … It’s a
whole new family of computing devices,” “With Windows 8, we didn’t want
to leave any seam uncovered,” “The Surface is something new that we
think people will absolutely love,” he added
The tablet which comes with a 10.6-inch display will run on either of
the new version of Microsoft’s operating system, Windows 8 or Windows
RT as stated by the
Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer at an event yesterday at Milk
Studios in Los Angeles. The device will come with an optional built-in
touch keyboard, two cameras and a stand. Surface will be available later
this year.
Stock price of Microsoft has risen by 0.4 percent to the equivalent
of $29.98 in German trading around 10:00 this morning in Frankfurt while
that of Apple dropped 0.4 percent to the equivalent of $583.18.
Dominance by Apple
It will be recalled that Apple held its lead in the first quarter of
2012 in the world of tablet computing, Apple is carrying almost 65
percent of worldwide tablet units having sold about 67 million tablets
worldwide, Apple’s success with the iPad has led Microsoft to make a
very bold move to capture it’s own share of the market but many
analysts believe that gaining ground against Apple won’t be easy. Other
companies such as Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), Samsung Electronics Co and
RIM have all released new tablets but Apple’s iPad continues to dominate
the market.
Some analysts believe that for Microsoft to compete aggressively with
iPad in this business, they will have to come with a better software
rather than focusing on harware design
What do you think about the new Microsoft tablet? will you buy one?
do you think it can give apple a run for their money? I will like to
hear from you
